My experiences primarily lie with second and third generation nanomachines. They're the ones I've been using since I was born.

They range from one micrometer to one nanometer in size, typically, and can be programmed for various purposes. Many, in recent years, are used for medical purposes. Mine are programmed to function for communication but I can reprogram them to repair any wounds I would receive by organizing a supply of platelets that would be used to coagulate the wound. They can also monitor my life signs.
