Character NAME: Sunny Emmerich
Canon & MEDIUM: Metal Gear Rising | Video Game
Canon PULL-POINT: After sending Raiden off in the RLV
Character AGE: 11
Character ABILITIES: You will never be able to work a computer or programming the way this child does. She is extremely skilled in computer programming and advanced robotics due to her time with the Patriots. If something needs programming, from VCR’s to advanced government websites and computers, or even complicated viruses or ways to be rid of such viruses, Sunny is more than capable of doing so.
Character HISTORY:
Sunny was born in 2008 in a Patriot-run hospital where she was taken from her mother’s care shortly after to be held prisoner for Olga’s cooperation. At a young age, she was experimented on and put to work on computers by the Patriots, making her a prodigy in computer programming, hacking, etc. Her skills with a computer were made, unintentionally, on par with Otacon’s if not better. Little is known about what Sunny did or was made to do while she was under the Patriots care but, when Raiden rescued her, she had no social abilities and stuttered often when she spoke with someone.
Living aboard the Nomad over the next few years, Otacon became something of a father-figure for the orphaned Sunny and she adopted some of Otacon’s behavior. She took to using the computers on board the Nomad in order to learn more about herself, the outside world and who her parents were. Hal at one point remarked that the net is her home and in a sense, he is correct but also, not. Sunny never expressed any desire to leave the Nomad or to see anything she learned about on the net. More because she knew it wasn’t possible for her to safely leave the Nomad while the Patriots were alive than anything else. With Hal’s, she eventually discovered a bit about her mother and found a picture which she kept in the kitchen to look at while she cooked.
Sunny was (and still is), in essence, a member of Philanthropy, helping to build and program the Metal Gear Mk II, a mini Metal Gear that carried a bit of ammo for Snake, has an electrified tentacle for distracting enemies and helps to keep Snake in contact with the Nomad alongside his Codec. She is also the one responsible for finding the designs for Snake’s OctoCamo, having hacked the system from DARPA and downloading the specs and designs to the Nomad’s large system of computers.
With a love for cooking, Otacon kept three chickens on board the Nomad so Sunny has enough eggs to satisfy her love for cooking. She always cooked sunny side-up eggs and called it her “Sunny Side-up Fortune telling”. If the eggs came out good the mission would be a success, if not then the mission would fail.
When Campbell finally came to Snake to ask him to stop Liquid Ocelot’s insurrection, they didn’t prevent Sunny from hearing their whole mission briefing, though Otacon did keep her out of the room. But, there’s no door to Sunny’s room, so she could hear without difficulty.
When Snake left on the mission, Sunny made sure to provide backup by researching some of the people that Snake met. Especially Drebin. When he finally found him, Liquid Ocelot messed with the SOP system, which caused the nanomachines in Snake’s body (as well as all of the other soldiers in the facility that were equipped with nanomachines) to suddenly go haywire. However, thanks to Rat Patrol Team 01, Snake was returned to the Nomad where it was discovered that he had be given an injection that helped stabilize his nanos and by none other than Naomi Hunter. When she made eggs for Snake as he was recovering, Sunny took easy offence when Snake remarked that he didn’t remember the sun being so flat, which nearly sent the girl into tears.
When Naomi managed to send a video to the Nomad, informing Otacon and Snake that she was being held by Liquid Ocelot and forced to work for him in order to learn a way to control the SOP system, they started to prepare a way to save her. A map encrypted in Soliton Radar format was sent with the video which Sunny decoded it with ease, despite her lack of knowledge in how a Soliton Radar works. This started a cycle of respect that Sunny had for Naomi, even before meeting her.
After Snake left to get Naomi, Sunny waited on board the Nomad with Otacon. Which was no different than usual. That is, until Otacon left in the helicopter which left the young girl alone on the Nomad to wonder what had made him have to leave without her. When he returned, he came back not only with Snake and Naomi, but a desperately wounded Raiden as well. During this time, Sunny and Naomi formed a bond, the older woman helping Sunny to learn to cook better and giving Sunny a blue flower from her shirt, tucked into the little girls hair.
Later, Sunny searched for information about Raiden through the net so that they could find a way to save him, and she ended up hacking the information from AT Security, the Patriots. Through this, Naomi showed her that Raiden’s blood needed to be dialyzed in order for them to save his life, and they could only find the equipment to perform the procedure from Dr. Madnar, the scientist who turned him into a cyborg ninja in the first place. Sunny immediately went back to her computer to look for more information. Naomi later found Sunny asleep at her computer, looking up information about her mother, Olga.
Not long after, Sunny left with Naomi to get the equipment from Dr. Madnar in order to begin Raiden’s treatment. Naomi disappeared after bringing the equipment back to the Nomad and Sunny took over Raiden’s treatment. Before she left, she entrusted Sunny with a plan that she had originally intended to leave in Otacon’s hands.
She was still taking care of Raiden when Snake returned to the Nomad, with half of his face burned up, after meeting with Big Mama. She also seemed to really want to help Snake, but when he started to suggest that Raiden go with him on his mission to kill Liquid, Sunny immediately turned to protect him from Snake. Insisting that he needed to rest. Truthfully, she was right, but Raiden didn’t seem to want to believe that. He tried to get up to go with Snake but only ended up showing that he was way too weak to leave. This also probably is the first time that Sunny was able to hear just how emotionally damaged Raiden had become. He ended up on the floor and Snake had to help her hook him back up to the dialysis machine.
After Snake had returned to his mission, Sunny gave Raiden the go ahead so that he could return to the field. She couldn’t have done this very willingly and definitely wouldn’t want him to go out into danger but she seems to understand that Raiden and Snake had to go, no matter what she wanted. However, before Raiden left, Sunny asked her to give Naomi a message. That she had finally cooked sunny side up eggs properly.
In order to control the Patriot’s AI network, Ocelot used the genetic code from Big Boss. By doing this, he took over the SOP system. Every gun connected to the system in the world was disabled. His intention was to launch a nuclear warhead at the core of the Patriot’s AI network, JD, in space. He wanted to destroy JD, because another proxy AI (GW) would take over as the core AI. And Ocelot had made sure that GW was housed in Outer Haven so he would have complete control over the system.
The Patriots would have eventually injected the nanomachines into the entire population, not just soldiers, to exact total control. In order to completely ruin the Patriots, as well as stop Liquid, the AI’s had to be destroyed.
Naomi knew all of this so she passed on a flash drive to Sunny while she was on the Nomad. This flash drive included all of the information she had on Outer Haven, as well as the incomplete program data for a computer virus. Sunny took the program and worked Emma’s old worm cluster into Naomi’s code. This created a virus that would cause the AI’s programs to attack itself, move onto the other parts of the AI and destroy that but it wouldn’t destroy the AI’s ability to continue providing the world with water, food, and transportation so the world wouldn’t suffer and wouldn’t be made aware of the Patriots disappearance. This virus was called FOXALIVE. Now they just had to get the virus into the system.
Snake managed to get the virus to GW, defeat Liquid Ocelot and the Patriots were subdued without ruining the world order. Meanwhile Otacon pondered if Sunny’s creation of the virus was her own way of avenging her mother.
Sunny later attended the wedding of Meryl and Akiba with Otacon, but Snake was gone. For the first time, Sunny really had a chance to be outside, and she even made her first friend. Despite the fact that she couldn’t speak his language.
She wanted to give the MK III to him to him as a present. It was that day that Sunny discovered that she adored being outside and loved looking towards the sun. Otacon told her that she can finally live in the outside world and she admitted to liking it, but she then began to wonder about Snake. Otacon told her that Snake was sick and he went away for a while, hat he needed time to rest. Sunny noticed that Otacon was choking up and she asked him if he was crying. He denied it but ended up putting his glasses on the wrong way and making her laugh. She clung to his arm, and they watched the sun set together.
[END METAL GEAR SOLID 4]
Sometime after this, Otacon officially went through the process of adopting Sunny and she took on the surname 'Emmerich.'
In Metal Gear Rising, Sunny had become a lead designer and programmer at Solis Space and Aeronautics. She had briefly attended school, for less than a year, but due to her time with the Patriots and growing up secluded on the Nomad, she was well beyond anything school had to offer. So she left. And while working with Solis, Sunny continued to work as a member of Philanthropy.
It was in 2018 that Sunny was reunited with Raiden though the situation was hardly what one would call a happy circumstance. Raiden had come to Solis for the sake of using the RLV (a craft capable of traveling at Mach 23) she was developing to get to Pakistan before the US presidential candidate could be assassinated. Despite this, she did tease him by mentioning that he was going to pay to repair and restructuring costs of the gate and locking mechanism he damaged while entering the Solis compound. While there, Sunny easily befriended Bladewolf, something that Raiden had yet to be able to really do.
On his way to Pakistan and while there, Raiden was able to contact Sunny via Codec and talk with her about her work and, briefly, about Otacon. These conversations show just how intelligent a child he was working with. It was during one of these conversations that Sunny asked whether or not she could have Bladewolf.
When Raiden started to fight Metal Gear EXCELSUS and then Armstrong, she instantly started to regret helping him get to Pakistan, afraid that something was going to happen to him, blaming herself for putting him in harms way. Raiden made sure to promise to come back alive and he did. After, Sunny confided in George that she always considered Raiden a hero, no matter what anyone else thought, because he had saved her life.
Character PERSONALITY:
Sunny is a very sweet young girl and has grown out of her shyness towards others as well as the stutter she'd developed while in the Patriots custody. Since she was younger, Sunny has become a much more confident and independent individual, working with Solis Space and Aeronautics on NASA contracts. Something she wouldn't have done when she was younger. She's a lot more cheerful as well, happy to be in the world and helping people in a way that she couldn't on the Nomad while the Patriots still existed. Raiden even notices the change in her, commenting to one of his co-workers that she's "a lot sunnier" than she used to be.
This kid is also extremely intelligent and she has no problem with showing that off, explaining how a LACE engine works to Raiden despite him not understanding and telling him about how the RLV was developed using a genetic algorithm. She will make adults feel like morons and while, most of the time, it's intentional that doesn't mean she regrets it. Sunny can't help being as smart as she is, after all.
For being eleven years old, Sunny is incredibly mature. She was mature when she was six and this is because Sunny has had to deal with a great many things already in her short life from being kidnapped at birth, used as leverage against her mother, rescued from Area 51 by a cyborg Ninja (Raiden) and kept on board the Nomad for years to keep her safe so that the Patriots wouldn't kill her. Which she was aware of, she knew that leaving the safe haven Otacon and Snake made for her could get her killed. Not ever that though, she also took care of Raiden when she was six and he was injured, needing dialysis. Which she took care of.
She's never stopped caring about others. When she was younger, she took care of Raiden (as I mentioned) and tried to keep Snake from smoking. Now, she worries over Raiden as he works to stop another war from breaking out between Pakistan and the USA, that she may have sent him into danger and blaming herself if something happens to him. And she's loyal. It's this loyalty that lead her to help Raiden in the first place. If you ever find Sunny a friend to you, she'll be one of the most loyal and watch your back.
Oh. And she has a terrible sense of humor. She teases Raiden about the RLV, commenting that she was surprised that it actually worked with dropping him off and heading back up and around the world to return to Solis. At least she waits until he's safely on the ground again before saying so.
Aside from that, Sunny's skills in programming and machine development helping her get a job with Solis had helped her become more of a leader than anything else in her life had. Boris even comments that Sunny is the only one with the "authority" that would agree to help Raiden and that she's the lead developer. It's thanks to her that the RLV, after all, could be developed so quickly as it had been. And yet, seeing the way science and technology has been abused, Sunny has adopted the same cynical view as Otacon: that science will only ever end up being used for war. And this breaks her heart.

First PERSON:
[A young girl appears over the tablets, a couple of smudges of oil across her cheek and a blue rose hair clip holding back almost silver-blonde hair. For a kid, she doesn't look nearly as fearful or panicked as most new Transports are looking. In fact, she looks a bit excited.]
The moon, huh? I know that there are plans for a proper moon landing in the works but it's not Solis contracted for it. Still, it's kind of exciting! This might be good prep for getting to Jupiter. Every little bit helps after all, right? And it would be a good start so I can do it while Hal is still alive.
[Sunny hush.]
Oh! I'm, uh, 'm being rude, huh?
I'm Sunny Emmerich, one of the lead developers on various projects at Solis Space and Aeronautics. Since this isn't my world, I guess those projects are on hold. So if you need me for anything, just give me a call, alright? I'll be glad to help out!
(Also Sunny on the test drive and Sunny meeting Captain America on the test drive.)
Third PERSON:
Curfew? What was curfew? Sunny had never had any concept of a time that a child should be in bed. Especially not one as talented as Hal had always told her she was. And seeing as she was on a parallel Earth trapped in a planet-wide civil war (more or less) that probably didn't apply. That and they were on the moon. Besides, late night was the best time to get some work done. Very few people were awake to interrupt or bother her. Very few people were awake to treat her like a child.
So she was free to work at a new simulation program. Nothing difficult by her standards and nothing that any normal Transport would be capable of getting through. No, once she'd found the simulation rooms, seen what they'd had to offer and had run into Raiden, Sunny had known exactly how to spend her time. And that , specifically, was creating a VR simulation of a proper Metal Gear battle. With a variety of difficulties up to multiple Metal Gears in one fight. Sure it would be unfair but Raiden was a lot better than anyone else. Snake had been able to beat a Metal Gear and he was human. Raiden was a cyborg ninja with an HF Blade at his disposal. It would never hurt to test his capabilities and this was just a VR Simulation.
It was taking a lot longer than she would have liked. The systems on the moon based were a bit foreign to her. Appropriately advanced for this time, she supposed, but nothing that she couldn't handle. A little bit of jiggery pokery and a few careful adjustments and she could work without messing anything important up.
Neat!
"A little bit of this and- oh, that doesn't look very realistic."
Okay so right now, a bit of help would be useful for input. Nobody really knew about Metal Gears unless they were from her instance of Earth, and who ever imagined she'd be thinking that, so they couldn't help with accuracy about their capabilities but they could give opinions on how everything looked.
